MARINA PAPPAS

I took a year long apprenticeship at Reebok HQ focusing in apparel graphics. The majority of the time I worked on mens and women's Crossfit. 

These are a several pieces I worked on for the SS17/FW18 lines. Scroll down for process - shows initial hand textures to text explorations.

Goal: create album art for the song “Molasses” by future-soul band Hiatus Kaiyote. The song is about perspective and making the choice to either hang on to the negative or let go for the better.  

"The only constant in life is change." 

This pattern is about the movement we experience...either literally in a short time span that our bodies experience or a long period of time that our minds experience. It’s about loving and embracing change gracefully. 

Chopping original repeat = idea that sometimes movement stops/changes paths from what’s expected.

Color = bright and playful to represent this embrace for change.

Goal: to be creative every day for 26 days; create an abstracted alphabet; explore with color, texture, form.

Goal: juxtapose the words PUNK and SPORT with texture and typography. Show their personalities. Then combine both ideas.

THOUGHT PROCESS:

SPORT = disciplined, team/goal oriented, regimented schedule, healthy sleeping/eating habits, body movement consistent

PUNK = rebel, unpredictable, aggressively unconventional, unknown schedule, energetic

BOTH = determined, progressive, strong minded, creative, focused on freedom, challenge self and norm. Both test limits and follow a unique and passionate path.

COMPOSITION:  Using phrase “NOT MY LIMIT” to emulate the two personalities. Both follow the same grid structure.

D&D Building, NY, NY

During my internship at Liora Manne I created strike-offs for clients to help design rugs, pillows, and wall coverings.  I learned so much about color while working here - Most of my tasks dealt with color way creating and color matching, and overall I developed a more sensitive eye to color.  

1. A visual response to the soulful song called “Add The Bassline” by Jordan Rakei. I represented the combination of instruments and their sound, the rhythm, and overall feel of the song by abstracting letterforms. 

2. An ode to my major in school at the College of Design at NCSU: fibers.

3. One square yard of screen printed eyebrows.

Two posters designed for two separate events relating to the nature of the typefaces Helvetica and Georgia. I thought of each typeface as a “personality” which I portrayed through two different dance parties.

Folded, clay resist painted, twisted, tied, or clamped fabric...and then dyed with indigo or MX dyes.

The first three photos were taken in the Pantheon in Roma. I LOVED capturing people's reactions upon entering the beautiful space.

The last six photos were taken on the streets of Rome. I wanted to capture the beautiful moments that usually go unnoticed in every day life -- a mother with her hands full, very close talkers, eating lunch with a pigeon, to mention a few.
